Yet American horses can still be transported across our borders to countries where they may be slaughtered.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How does that make sense?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If we believe horse slaughter is unacceptable in this country, why should it become acceptable simply because it happens somewhere else?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The horses don\u2019t know the difference. They still endure the transportation. They still face the slaughterhouse. And they still lose their lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>All we\u2019ve done is move the killing beyond our borders.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s a convenient distinction for policymakers to make:<\/strong> <strong><em>We don\u2019t slaughter horses here.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But what does that statement really mean when we continue allowing horses to be shipped elsewhere for exactly that purpose?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We know what can happen to these animals. We know that long-distance transportation can expose them to overcrowding, injuries, exhaustion, and suffering. And we know what awaits horses shipped for slaughter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So why are we passing the responsibility to another country?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If the goal is to protect horses from slaughter, the protection shouldn\u2019t end at the American border.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stopping domestic slaughter while permitting slaughter-bound exports doesn\u2019t solve the underlying problem.
