Are Animals Conscious? The Better Question Is: Why Do We Still Doubt It?
A hermit crab may seem like a simple creature, but its behavior raises a profound question: Are animals conscious?
Animals perceive their surroundings, respond to danger, learn from experience, and make decisions. These behaviors demonstrate sophisticated responses to the world, although they do not by themselves establish subjective experience.
Growing scientific evidence suggests that consciousness may extend far beyond humans, potentially including crustaceans such as hermit crabs.
We may not know precisely what a hermit crab experiences. But uncertainty should encourage compassion, not indifference.
Animals don’t have to think like humans to deserve compassion and protection.
